The company was founded in December 2000 by Avio and the Italian Space Agency as “ELV S.p.A.”, acronym of European Launch Vehicle to develop and qualify the VEGA launch vehicle. In May 2018, after the qualification of the new launch Vehicle and 10 successful commercial flights, AVIO and ASI decided to re-orient the mission of the company and the VEGA activities were transferred to AVIO S.p.A. to better manage the business associated to the new product. The company changed its mission and its name to “Spacelab S.p.A.” with the aim to focus on research and development for new technologies in the field of space transport systems, launchers and the associated components and equipment. 70% of Spacelab is currently owned by Avio and 30% by ASI as in the former ELV. Technologies able to bring about product innovations, as well as the design of cutting-edge infrastructures for experimenting with these technologies will be the core of the new mission: the capacity to experiment plays an indispensable strategic part in putting new technologies into practice in industry.
